On Saturday night (NZT) Dan Carter took to social media to announce his retirement from professional rugby.
The 38 year-old, who first picked up a rugby ball 32 years ago, said he was grateful he was able to announce the news on his own terms.
“I can’t thank everyone who has played a part in my journey enough, from my teammates, opponents, coaching and management teams, sponsors and in particular you, the fans.”
He went onto play 112 Tests for the All Blacks, having made his debut against Wales as a 21 year-old in 2003. After his international retirement, he joined Racing 92 in Paris, before moving to Japan to play for the Kobe Steelers for two seasons.

Siya Kolisi has penned an open letter to the Western Province Rugby Union and fans for their ongoing support.
In the letter, titled
ELEVEN YEARS: A LIFETIME OF GRATITUDE, Kolisi pays tribute to the coaches, fellow players and fans who played a significant role in his development. I am forever indebted to you for offering me the opportunity to live out my dream. You have allowed little boys and girls across South Africa who look just like be to believe that they too, can be anything they put their mind to. Almost 200 fintech businesses applied for the AlphaCode Incubate programme which aims to grow innovative financial services entrepreneurs and find the next OUTsurance or Discovery.
Ten of them have been selected for a development programme that provides funding, guidance from performance coaches and a panel of advisory experts, access to AlphaCode’s co-working space and opportunities to apply for further early-stage investment.
The 12-week intensive pre-incubation programme is valued at R500 000, including R150 000 in grant funding for each participant. This jump-start programme has just begun and focuses on achieving a viable business.
It culminates in a demo day, where participants will compete for a place in a six-month step-up programme. Step-up offers grant funding of R500 000 for each startup and intensive incubation focused on achieving both product-market fit and financial viability.
