South Africa’s best up and coming fintech startups sweated it out at a virtual demo day yesterday where they had just five minutes each to convince a panel of judges that they should be part of the second phase of the AlphaCode Incubate programme.
The 10 startups, which have just completed a three-month programme, competed for one of four places in an extended six-month programme valued at almost R1,5-million each. Their success, which was validated by their ability to get traction in a short time, unlocks further funding of R500 000 each and tailored business support.
Andile Maseko, head of ecosystem development at AlphaCode, comments: “Despite a tumultuous year, a number of entrepreneurs saw how they could fill a gap in the market for financial services and related industries. Those selected in the top four earned the opportunity for further funding and mentorship. The first part of the intensive programme focused on entrepreneurship and refining business models

JOHANN VAN GRAAN has praised Conor Murray’s work ethic after the Munster and Ireland scrum-half was named to take part in his third British and Irish Lions tour.
Murray, 32, has overcome one of the most challenging periods of his career to emerge as the likely starting scrum-half on this summer’s tour to South Africa.
For context it feels worthwhile to glide over the history of Leinster in semi-finals â especially in France â if only to realise just how difficult it will be to stop them setting up a battle with Toulouse for that elusive fifth star.
âLa Rochelle are a serious team,â warned former Scottish flanker and French resident Johnnie Beattie on Second Captains. âDonât underestimate the team Leinster are coming up against. They are so good and a joy to watch.â
Leinster in Champions Cup semi-finals can be neatly divvied into three categories: The age of OâGara; Gibbes and the trophy hunt; Leo Cullenâs empire building.
