UMC unveils new Children s Emergency Center in Lubbock

UMC Health System is opening a new Children’s Emergency Center, an emergency room just for children. The new campus located at 602 Indiana Ave., right next to the existing adult emergency room, will have access to more resuscitation and trauma rooms than any other children s hospital in West Texas, according to a news release. The new facility has eight dedicated pediatric beds and five trauma beds, with one dedicated as a pediatric trauma room.  According to a news release, the children s emergency room will have an in-house pediatric orthopedic surgery team to quickly help children in an emergency situation. The hospital will have immediate access to x-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds and MRI to provide the most advanced care.

UMC set to open new children s emergency center May 3

The new $1.8 million UMC Children s Emergency Center, located at 602 Indiana behind the Adult Emergency Center, is full of light and brightly painted pinwheels throughout the new center and set to open May 3. Dr. Brian Payne, chief medical officer for UMC Children s hospital, said the new center is apart of the Children Medical Network and the new emergency center was funded by them. Originally UMC had only one emergency center that serviced both adults and children. Our goal was to recognize that children do sometimes have very specific needs, and that by separating it out, it helped us to make it very comfortable area, Dr. Payne said. This allowed us to really make it so that they felt more comfortable, more friendly to them.

UMC Children’s Hospital has placed Pinwheels for Prevention in the courtyard, to bring awareness to child abuse in Lubbock. “It starts with today. Letting people know it’s happening. It’s happening here in Lubbock and we’re here to do our part to prevent, to treat, and really to pray that we can end it,” CEO Mark Funderburk said.
