News By Isha Trivedi Feb 1, 2021 12:43 AM Almost one year after administrators implemented a hiring freeze to offset the financial impacts of COVID-19, department chairs said they have struggled to offer enough classes without part-time faculty members. Provost Brian Blake said he has still been approving certain hires during the freeze that officials had an “absolute need” for, but he won’t feel comfortable lifting the freeze until administrators have a better idea of the status of the fall semester. Department chairs said they often rely on part-time faculty members to teach lower-level courses and leave electives to full-time professors, but the hiring freeze has forced more full-time faculty into introductory courses, limiting elective offerings.

Franco Fieramosca, a Huge Force in the Luxury Footwear Business, Dies at 81 Katie Abel Franco Fieramosca, a huge force in the luxury footwear business who was instrumental in building Gucci, Prada and other top labels in the U.S. market, died Wednesday at age 81 from complications related to a liver condition. “Footwear was his passion. Work was his life. He loved his job so much,” said his wife, Cristina Fieramosca. “He was still in touch with a lot of people. He never let it go.” An expert in both product development and distribution, Fieramosca was born and raised in Italy, and his career began in 1960 at Bally of Switzerland. He studied all aspects of production, and in 1973, the company transferred him to the U.S. “In those days, it was Bally, Bruno Magli and Ferragamo,” Fieramosca said in a 2008 interview. “There was no Prada, and Gucci had only its own retail business, which was not huge in this country.”

GW provided most money on research in history in 2020, officials say

Officials doled out more money on research expenditures last calendar year than any other year in University history, Provost Brian Blake said at a Faculty Senate meeting Friday. Blake said GW’s researchers had a “phenomenal” year despite the pandemic and ended up spending more than $200 million on research projects. He said GW had a “record year” of invention disclosures and patents in 2020, and the number of GW-authored documents and citations of work done by GW researchers reached a 10-year high.
