Eastpointe driving forward with 2021 Cruisin’ Gratiot

EASTPOINTE Eastpointe is getting in gear for Cruisin’ Gratiot, the traditional days-long celebration of Eastpointe and car culture.
This year’s cruise will take place Thursday, June 17; Friday, June 18; and Saturday, June 19. The three-day schedule is reduced from its usual six-day length.
“It’s three days instead of six, with a car show on Thursday at First State Bank, and two other car shows on Friday and Saturday at the high school,” said co-organizer and former Eastpointe Mayor Suzanne Pixley. “The first one on Friday is from 2-8 p.m., and the second one on Saturday is from 9 a.m.-8 p.m., both at the high school. We have other events such as Immanuel Methodist Church having music, balloons and other attractions. Andary’s restaurant will be selling T-shirts. The fatal collapses for the month were reported in Georgia, Virginia, South Dakota, Michigan and California.
Those fatalities bring the year’s construction trench-collapse death toll to at least 21, which is the same as in 2019, according to reports compiled by Equipment World from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and news media. (Cumulative OSHA data on trench-collapse deaths have not been released for 2019 and 2020.)
Trench-collapse deaths among construction workers appear to be rising slightly since 2018. There were 17 fatalities that year being investigated by OSHA and state agencies, according to the NIOSH Science Blog.
A breakdown of construction trench fatalities between 2003 and 2020 shows that – outside of 2016, when there was a decade-high of 33 trench deaths – 2019 and 2020 are tied for the second-deadliest years since 2010.
Eastpointe mourns the death of DPW employee

EASTPOINTE The city of Eastpointe is mourning the death of a municipal employee from injuries suffered while working on a Department of Public Works project.
At 6:20 p.m. Dec. 30, DPW employees were working to repair a water main break on Gratiot Avenue near Lydia Avenue. According to the Eastpointe Department of Public Safety, the trench around the main collapsed and trapped DPW worker Brian Theobald.
Emergency services were dispatched, and Eastpointe firefighters and nearby citizens worked to free Theobald.
“Our firefighter/paramedics and Medstar ambulance personnel administered life-saving measures and transported Mr. Theobald to a local hospital,” the Department of Public Safety posted on Facebook. “Tragically, Mr. Theobald’s injuries were too severe and he did not survive. EASTPOINTE, Mich. A public works employee has died following a trench collapse in suburban Detroit, authorities said.
A crew had been called out to repair a water main break in Eastpointe when water and mud poured into the trench about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Deputy Fire Chief Nick Sage said the victim was trapped about 10 minutes before firefighters could pull him out, according to The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens.
He later died at a hospital.
The worker was identified by Eastpointe City Manager Elke Doom as Brian Theobald, a 13-year public works employee.
“Brian died serving the citizens of Eastpointe and will always be remembered,” Doom said Thursday in a statement.
