St Berchmans (SB) College in Changanassery has a special connection to Shakespeare. The college, one of the important learning centres in Kerala which began functioning on June 19, 1922, boasts one of the oldest Shakespeare campus theatres in the country, with the Bard a unique bonding factor between generations of its students and teachers.
Now, in its centenary year, the college authorities, students, teachers and the alumni are seeking to create a Shakespeare production worthy of the occasion. SB’s first Shakespeare production was in 1937 by the legendary Prof M P Paul, one of the major critics in Malayalam literature and professor of the college’s English department. After Paul, the equally renowned Prof C A Sheppard took charge followed by professors A E Augustine, K J John, C C Thomas, K V Joseph and Gigi Joseph.
