Jones and another 35-year-old inmate were found unresponsive in their housing unit about 8 p.m. Monday.
After life-saving measures were provided, including CPR and naloxone administration, correctional officers and medical staff had the men taken to Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus.
Jones, who was admitted in critical condition, died about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The second inmate, who was admitted in stable condition, fully recovered and has been returned to the Smyrna-area facility.
Jones body was turned over to the state Division of Forensic Science to determine the cause of death. A death investigation is being conducted by Delaware State Police and is pending at this time, Shavack said.

Suspected human remains found in Gumboro last week were located in the same area a missing man was last seen 10 years earlier.
Police confirmed the discovery Jan. 22 after maintaining a weeklong presence on R Farm Lane. The remains have been turned over to the Division of Forensic Science for identification and to determine manner of death.
Police have yet to announce any link in the cases.
John Douglas Wisniewski Sr., then 45, was last seen at his home on R Farm Lane at about 1 a.m. Jan. 24, 2011, according to a Delaware State Police press release at the time. He is still listed as missing in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
