The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is a 1965 British Cold War spy film directed by Martin Ritt and starring Richard Burton, Claire Bloom, and Oskar Werner. Based on the 1963 novel of the same name by John le Carré, the film is about a British agent who is sent to East Germany in order to sow disinformation about a powerful East German intelligence officer. - October 19, 1931: Born David Cornwell in the southern English coastal town of Poole in Dorset.
- 1936: Olive Cornwell flees the family home, leaving the young le Carre to be raised by his father Ronnie, a tyrant and conman who was jailed twice for fraud.
- 1948 to 1956: Studies French and German in Bern in Switzerland, where he begins his espionage career, before moving to Oxford.
- 1954: Marries Alison Sharp, with whom he has three sons before their divorce in 1971.
- 1958: Starts working for MI5, British Security Service, and writes Call for the Dead , his first novel.
John le Carré, the spy turned novelist who became the pre-eminent writer of Cold War espionage fiction with works such as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, has died at age 89.
Le Carré died in Cornwall, southwest England on Saturday from pneumonia. publisher Penguin Random House said in a statement on Sunday. His family confirmed to The Guardian that the author had died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. We all deeply grieve his passing, they wrote in a statement.
In a literary career that spanned fifty-eight years, le Carré s works topped global bestseller lists in each decade starting from the 1960s onwards.
