A 21-day-old baby was rescued by a boatman in Ghazipur VARANASI: The state government will take care of the 21-day-old baby girl, found in a wooden box floating in river Ganga in Ghazipur district on June 14. The baby has been kept in a special neonatal care unit of the Government women’s hospital in Ghazipur before being sent to a shelter home. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who took note of the recovery of the baby girl on Wednesday, announced that the government will bear the cost of her nurturing and also provide benefits of government schemes, including a house, to the boatman who had rescued her. Presently, the local authorities are collecting details of the boatman to assess his eligibility for government benefits. Divisional commissioner Deepak Agrawal said, “After the CM’s announcement, district magistrate Ghazipur MP Singh reached the hospital to check on the condition of the girl. Her health condition is being monitored by the doctors as a precautionary measure.

Varanasi: The child protection department has appealed to people to report any case where Covid-19 has claimed lives of parents and any child has been orphaned. In order to ensure proper legal protection of the child, the department has also warned people against adopting such children without following the prescribed norms as it would be considered illegal. Though no case of children being orphaned amid pandemic has come to light in this region so far, there are appeals for help and requests for adoption of such children on social media. Women and child welfare deputy director Pravin Kumar Tripathi said that people should be aware about the procedure for seeking help of department and institutions working for protection of orphans.
