The Hillsdale County Board of Commissioners has tapped the county’s Information Technology Director David Holcomb to make recommendations for a Broadband Task Force he recommended the county form to explore bringing broadband internet services to rural Hillsdale County.
Holcomb made the recommendation during the July 27 Board of Commissioners meeting and said the U.S. Congress is currently reviewing a number of bills aimed at funding broadband internet expansions in rural communities.
“We need to prepare for the future,” Holcomb said. “We don’t want to be left needing to put a bunch of stuff together as the feds start to push money out.”

The Federal Communications Commission told SpaceX and other companies on Monday that the billions in rural broadband subsidies it doled out last year can’t be used in already connected areas like “parking lots and well-served urban areas,” citing complaints. The commission, in an effort to “clean up” its subsidy auction program, offered the companies a chance to rescind their funding requests from areas that already have service.
