Resurrecting the Rubber Duck s classic 1970 Mack

s ongoing weekly series of 60th anniversary lookbacks. The video above showcases my 2017 talk with 20-truck tanker fleet owner Anthony Fox of Rome, Georgia, also proud owner and caretaker of the piece of trucking and film history that Fox and I were discussing one of the original 1970 Mack RS700 models used in the classic “Convoy” trucking film, released on today s date 43 years ago in 1978. [ What’s better, the rig is attached to a likewise original trailer used in the film. It s a 1960s 5,800-gallon Trailmobile tank trailer with the battle scars, and prop-worthy mods, to prove it. Here’s Fox indicating where two explosive charges were set off in the iconic bridge scene in Convoy when troopers shot at the back of the truck, before the final confrontation.

Updated Jun 1, 2021 The following story was originally penned in 2016 by the most enthusiastic among trucking-culture enthusiasts, former American Trucker television series host and producer Robb Mariani, about a history-making event that year. It was updated slightly from its original form in June 2021 as part of Overdrive s 60th-anniversary celebration and its series of lookbacks at trucking history. Contemporary trucking seems about a million miles away from what trucking was even a decade ago, much less 50 years or so. But on a day in 2016 in Lincolnton, North Carolina, the past met the present as vintage truck owners got together to fellowship and pay homage to the equipment of yesteryear, much of it still in hardworking order today.
