THE ISSUE: It’s Monday, the day we take a few moments to highlight the good news in Lancaster County. Some of these items are welcome developments on the economic front or for neighborhoods across the county. Others are local stories of achievement, perseverance, compassion and creativity that represent welcome points of light in a still-difficult time. All of this news deserves a brighter spotlight. Renaming schools is bound to be a contentious matter, and there were more than two great options available for the School District of Lancaster at last week’s school board meeting. But we believe the board hit home runs with the two choices it made. The district “will rename two of its schools after Black women as part of a districtwide effort to rename buildings named after slave owners and others who don’t fit the city school district’s values,” LNP | LancasterOnline’s Alex Geli reported Friday.

Cape High seniors named Secretary of Education Scholars

Keen, Klopp, Monigle among top students in Delaware Ellen Driscoll May 24, 2021 Three Cape High seniors are among 90 Delaware public school students from the Class of 2021 to be named Secretary of Education Scholars. Riley Keen, Riley Klopp and Emily Monigle were among students recognized by Secretary of Education Susan Bunting for outstanding achievements. All three Cape High students have excelled in the classroom and on the playing field.   These seniors have accomplished much during their high school careers,” Bunting said of all awardees. “Their outstanding academic achievements and leadership records both in and out of the classroom are extremely impressive.   Students have persevered, even though COVID-19 forced them to learn and work differently, Bunting said.

May 20, 2021 Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health added 1257 new cases of coronavirus to the state s overall total, which is now 1,190,102. 54 new COVID-19-related deaths reported Wednesday pushes the overall state number to 26,925 since the beginning of the pandemic. Right now, there are 1427 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 320 of whom are in the intensive care unit. Another Pennsylvania college is requiring students provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination before returning for the fall semester. Franklin & Marshall College says studentw will have to provide a scanned copy of their completed vaccination cards to the Student Wellness Center by August 1st. The school says it will accomodate students who have approved medical or religious exemptions.

Dave Proulx named as RISD interim president

(WLNE)- Rhode Island School of Design’s Board of Trustees has appointed Dave Proulx to serve as interim president, the college announced Wednesday. Current president Rosanne Somerson will retire at the end of June. Proulx currently serves as RISD’s senior vice president of finance and administration. Prior to his position at RISD, Proulx held administrative roles at Franklin & Marshall College and the University of New Hampshire. “During the pandemic, Dave helped us persevere through the greatest financial and operational challenge in our history,” said RISD Board of Trustees Chair Michael Spalter. “As our interim president, he will focus on a successful opening of the campus in fall 2021 and continued progress on RISD’s strategic plan.”
