Moral failing of Gov Lee : Pastors fear constitutional carry law will worsen gun violence Jordan Whittington © Provided by WZTV - Nashville
As Tennessee s constitutional carry law goes into effect, faith leaders across the Volunteer State lament a rise in already-climbing gun violence arguing Gov. Bill Lee should have never signed the bill into law.
Eugene Se bree is an associate pastor at Jefferson St. Missionary Baptist Church in north Nashville. He s voiced his concerns about the permitless carry law since the legislation was introduced. The fact that this law even passed in the first place demonstrates a moral failing of Governor Lee and our Legislators to keep our communities safe, Pastor Se bree said.

There are two moments in the spring when the historic Natchez Street community in Franklin is just a little more crowded than usual. Moments when the historic, predominantly Black neighborhood comes together, drawing friends and extended family to honor its youth.
For more than a century now, following the end of the Civil War, Natchez Street and its surrounding neighborhood were home to many of Franklin s Black residents and businesses. Natchez High School, Williamson County s only Black high school, was also there until it closed in 1967 with the onset of school integration.
Today the neighborhood annually celebrates many of the youths who would ve gone to school there if they d been students 54 years ago as they go through rite-of-passage moments like prom and graduation.

Yevette Smith, 57, happily hugged her cat Whisper in a comfortable apartment in Franklin last week as she sat on a fluffy couch recollecting how opposite her life seemed almost a year ago. She s been with me through everything, Smith, a California native, said looking down at the faithful Calico companion.
Back then, Smith could barely stretch out at night while she slept in her car in a Walmart parking lot. Life was uncomfortable and uncertain. I was just out there, she said. It was just Jesus and me against the world . Sometimes I thought, how do you get through this? But you have to have strong faith and spirit.
