Europe s Vega rocket blasted off from French Guiana on Wednesday carrying a next-generation Earth-imaging satellite that owner Airbus says will be an industry game-changer .
Pleiades Neo 3 is the first of a four-satellite constellation that, once complete, will offer the most advanced Earth observation service in Europe.
With a resolution of 30 centimetres, the satellites will be used for large-scale city mapping and crop/agriculture monitoring - while also enabling responses to critical situations, such as natural disasters, in real time.
Airbus has sunk 600 million euros into the Pleiades Neo network, which will allow Airbus to compete on equal terms with the world leader in space observation, the US company Maxar.

Toronto, Ontario & Toulouse, France, 04 March 2021 – Today, Ecopia AI (“Ecopia”) announced a partnership with Airbus to produce next-generation digital maps on a global scale including land use/land cover, roads, and building footprint data. This digital mapping solution will provide commercial and government users with an accurate and up-to-date digital representation of their areas of interest, driving better decision making across industries.
Under the agreement, Ecopia will have access to Airbus’ global premium 50cm high-resolution imagery database, applying their industry-leading artificial intelligence-based systems to extract vector maps on a city to continental scale with the accuracy of a GIS professional. Firefighters in Stellenbosch had their hands full last weekend with two fires in two different locations.
The first fire was reported in the Jonkershoek plantation on Saturday 5 December at around 13:40.
According to Jo-Anne Otto, Deputy Director: Communication Services at the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM), the fire was burning uncontrollably at that stage, having spread rapidly by strong south-easterly winds across dense vegetation and across inaccessible roads.
Five ground teams, consisting of 50 firefighters, 10 fire fighting vehicles and crew assisted by two helicopters, battled the fire.
The aerial crews stood down at last light, but ground crews and firefighters continued to work through Saturday night.
