Future of Airports | GPS aids Brussels runway resurfacing GPS technology has aided the milling operations which took place before a busy runway at Brussels Airport in Belgium was resurfaced. Belgium’s Brussels Airport handled more than 26M passengers in 2019 – a record breaking year. But despite these passenger numbers plunging by 74% in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and accompanying travel restrictions, operator Brussels Airport Company is focused on future proofing the airport’s infrastructure. At the heart of this is a major refurbishment of one of the airport’s three runways. Previously upgraded in 1996, runway 07L/25R was resurfaced during a 41 day closure, with the project team working around the clock.

Brussels Airport as project leader, together with 21 partners, submitted an ambitious plan with concrete projects to help the industry accelerate the sustainable transition. From the 16 proposals the Commission received it selected Brussels Airport’s Stargate plan, which, after a final round of procedures, will be granted 24.8 million euros of funding. Following the European Commission’s call to submit projects aimed at sustainable transportation within the scope of the EU Green Deal, Brussels Airport Company at the end of 2020 took the initiative to bring together 21 partners who strive to make a considerable contribution to the climate goals in the short term. Posted 20 January 2021 11:38 As part of the vaccination rollout plan in Belgium, the Skyhall, the iconic former transit hall at Brussels Airport, is set to become the vaccination centre for the residents of the towns of Zaventem, Wezembeek-Oppem and Kraainem. The huge events hall at the airport will be one of the two vaccination centres in the first-line healthcare zone ‘Druivenstreek’. Brussels Airport is happy to make the Skyhall available to these municipalities. “From the start of the Covid-19 crisis, Brussels Airport has actively contributed to protecting public health by providing test facilities”, explains Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport Company.
