Two southern states in India are the latest to declare lockdowns, as coronavirus cases surge at breakneck speed across the country and pressure mounts on Prime Minister Narendra Modi s government to implement a nationwide shutdown.
On Saturday, India reported 401,078 confirmed cases, including 4187 deaths. Overall, India has more than 21.8 million confirmed infections and nearly 240,000 deaths.
Experts say even those dramatic tolls are undercounts.
At more than 300,000, Karnataka s capital of Bengaluru has the highest active caseload of any Indian city.
But experts warn the worst is still ahead as India s third largest city buckles under oxygen shortages, overrun hospitals and crowded crematoriums.

Gurugram, May 6 : A joined team of the district drug controller department and the Gurugram police has arrested three men from Gurugram s Aklimpur village for allegedly smuggling oxygen cylinders to sell them in black market at higher rates in Gurugram, the police said on Wednesday.
260 oxygen cylinders, (250 small cylinders and 10 big cylinders) and a canter used for smuggling have been recovered from the trio. The arrested men have been identified as Vikas Kumar (32), a resident of Karnal at present residing in Gurugram s Unitech Sector-70, Shiv Kumar (33) from Karnal and Prabhat Kumar (31) from Thane, West Maharashtra.
Ranchi: Twelve days after the Jharkhand high court suspended the jail term of RJD president Lalu Prasad in a fodder scam case, lawyers of jailed former Bihar chief minister on Thursday secured his release order from the special CBI court here, following which he has been set free.
Lalu s lawyer Prabhat Kumar said, We have fulfilled the conditions set by the high court, including the furnishing of two sureties of Rs one lakh each and depositing a fine of Rs 10 lakh. The court has now granted the release order.
When contacted, Hamid Akhtar, the superintendent of the Birsa Munda Central Jail, where Lalu is officially lodged, said, the court order has been sent by e-mail to the All Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, where Lalu is currently undergoing treatment under custody, for his release.
