DELAND In the city s historic downtown, a mural is never far from view.
There are more than a dozen large-scale pieces as well as several smaller installations throughout the award-winning corridor.
Most of the larger works reflect scenes of old Florida or moments or key figures in the city s history.
And while the existing pieces haven t raised eyebrows, or stinks, it s an issue the city could face in the future without a codified policy in place.
City attorney Darren Elkind, who brought the proposed ordinance to the City Commission, said the murals, regardless of how they re funded, are not private works.
Jan 27, 2021 3:53 PM DeLand, FL - DeLand s Downtown Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) has accumulated cash in reserves and is asking residents for their input on how to spend it. With roughly $600,000 available, the money can be used for one major capital project or several smaller capital projects. A list of projects to choose from has been developed by the Downtown CRA Board, city staff and MainStreet DeLand Association. The projects align with the city’s redevelopment plan for the downtown area. There are seven suggested projects on the survey, including renovation of Sunflower and Painters Pond Park and leveling the pavers for the downtown sidewalks. The complete list can be found with the survey. Residents will be asked to list their top five choices. The survey is available at Downtown CRA Survey. Responses will be accepted through February 26. The results will be tabulated and presented to the Downtown CRA for consideration and approval.
DELAND Inspired by his great-grandfather who was a beer and whisky maker in Scotland, Jeff Hyder in September opened Hyderhead Brewery, a Scottish-themed brewpub/restaurant in downtown DeLand.
Four months later, Hyder s Scottish-style craft beers are now being sold in 22 other restaurants and the large, albeit socially distanced crowds he is drawing on Friday and Saturday nights already has him thinking about the possibility of eventually expanding. He added, however, that he has no immediate plans to do so at this time. We ve been booming even during COVID, Hyder said, referring to the coronavirus pandemic. If I have the opportunity, I would love to expand.
