Nigeria s Jebba Hydropower Plant to Undergo Rehabilitation

Sihle Qekeleshe, Web Editor January 27, 2021 Nigerian hydroelectricity company Mainstream Energy Solutions Ltd. has awarded Andritz – Austrian plant engineering group – the contract to modernize a generation unit at the Jebba hydroelectric power plant. The contract holds an estimated value of $36 million and will see the installation of new electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical equipment, with a view to expanding the lifespan and reliability of the equipment and ensuring that it adheres to frequency and voltage regulations as dictated by the national grid code. Under the contract, Andritz will supply and service a 96.4MW turbine, a 103MVA generator, transformer, outdoor switchyard and accessory equipment and the intake gate.

ANDRITZ receives order to modernize Jebba hydropower plant in Nigeria

International technology group ANDRITZ has received an order from Mainstream Energy Solutions for the modernization of one generation unit at Jebba hydroelectric power plant on the Niger River. Mainstream Energy Solutions is a privately owned power generating company in Nigeria incorporated in 2011 and licensed to operate the Kainji and Jebba Hydroelectric Power Plants through a concession agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria. The contract has a value of more than 30 million euros, and commissioning is planned for end of 2023/ beginning of 2024. The Jebba Hydroelectric Power Plant is located in Niger State, north-central part of Nigeria and was commissioned in 1985. It is situated 100 km downstream of the Kainji Hydroelectric Power Plant and equipped with six fixed blade propeller type turbines with a generating capacity of 96.4 MW each, resulting in a total installed capacity of 578.4 MW. Mainstream Energy Solutions recently awarded the turbine rehabilitation to Andritz, an Austrian group specialising in the design and manufacture of equipment such as turbines for hydroelectric power plants. In Nigeria, the rehabilitation of one of the turbines at the Jebba hydroelectric power station will start soon. The private Nigerian company Mainstream Energy Solutions, which specialises in power generation, recently selected Andritz to implement this project in Kwara State.
