LAFAYETTE, Ind. Streetscapes appealing oases in urban areas with street furniture and open spaces for visitors to linger and enjoy the aesthetics of a traditional downtown have an obvious drawback: the gobbling up of parking spaces.
The City of Lafayette, in its multi-phased streetscape project, will actually add parking spaces to downtown. Since 2018, according to a release sent to the Journal & Courier, Lafayette has added 115 parking spaces, including 12 handicapped spots, to the downtown area.
Phase III of the Main Street Streetscape project kicked off at the end of 2020, adhering, officials said, to the goal of enhancing the visitor experience, creating public spaces and balancing the needs of travel through the downtown area.
