Why can t Peoria replicate the success of thriving Spring Grove?

4:05 am UTC Apr. 14, 2021 PEORIA  Aurthur Perkins moved to the Spring Grove subdivision to prove a point. In 1995, she and her husband were two of the first residents to plunk down $500 to live in the new and unique development, a suburban layout amid an urban cityscape. But Perkins, a longtime educator and lifelong South Peorian, relocated to Spring Grove to make a statement with two audiences: Black people who saw themselves as forever stuck in the same place, as well as white people who thought minorities generally unable to move up in the world.  “I wanted to show people that African Americans could have nice places and take care of nice places and enjoy nice places,” said Perkins, 83.

Peoria Housing Authority Recruiting New Leadership After 3 Years Under Springfield Management

The Peoria Housing Authority is looking for its own chief executive officer to run the agency. This comes about three years after the PHA tapped the Springfield Housing Authority s Jackie Newman to come in and improve operations, following the departure of the housing authority s last local manager. The PHA was rated substandard by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for several years prior to the management change-up. In January, board chairman Carl Cannon said the desired improvements have taken hold since Newman came on board. This current contract with our friends and I do say our friends in Springfield has been amazing. We are progressing, Cannon said.

PHA Hires New Firm To Handle Public Housing Security

The Peoria Housing Authority is tapping a Rockford-area firm to provide private security services at its properties. Housing Authority Deputy Director Melissa Heffstedtler said she believes the new firm is a better fit. They are familiar with working with housing authority families, she said. They are less militarized, and more geared toward providing safety and security services. The new guards won t carry guns, but will be armed with pepper spray. Guards will work in pairs and stay in touch through cellphones. The PHA board unanimously approved a $64,000 contract with the company at its January meeting. Another firm that applied withdrew its bid following an interview with the search committee.
