PEORIA Pour one out for several outdoor drinking fountains that have been either shut off or removed from facilities within the Peoria Park District.
It s one of the lesser-known effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and one that Emily Cahill, the district s executive director, said could be temporary as vaccinations ramp up around the nation and central Illinois.
But the district will not turn on any of its 45 outdoor fountains which have been off since last year in 2021. Nor is it going to replace the ones that were removed due to a malfunction or other operational issue until it gets the green light to turn them back on.
An expansive, expensive makeover.
At least, that was the dream of a cadre of local business leaders. To them, outsiders thought of Peoria not as a modern, energized city but as a weathered, stagnating backwater. To them, “Will it play in Peoria?” carried a brutal answer: not anymore, as time was passing Peoria by.
“The old image of Peoria as a provincial river town must be laid to rest once and for all,” the group roared at the kickoff of a nationwide promotional campaign.
A 16-page, full-color tabloid – a pricey and ambitious effort for the time – would be first shared with readers of the Journal Star, then shotgunned across the country to mayors, entrepreneurs and public officials, including every decision maker in Washington, D.C., all the way up to the Oval Office. All told, a remarkable 375,000 copies would be distributed, some across the globe, others to out-of-town family and friends of local citizens who paid 25 cents per copy to help subsidize civic boost

The long-vacant property at a busy Peoria intersection might have a combination of retail and residential buildings in the not-too-distant future.
According to developer Katie Kim of The Kim Group, plans are progressing for development of the former Jim McComb Chevrolet site at the corner of War Memorial Drive and University Street.
“We’re working with the owners of the property right now to redevelop the roughly five acres that are right there at that southeast corner,” said Kim. “We have a financial institution that has the 1.6 acres right at the corner under contract.”
Kim said that the original hope was to have a single entity purchase and develop the entire site, but dividing the property has emerged as the desired scenario.
