Sustaining our soils for the future of farming

SHARING OPTIONS: Cover crops are one way of improving soil health and contribute to organic matter content, structure and increased microbial activity When you start to look at soil health, it can become very complicated, but taking small steps like soil testing and digging down to see what your soil looks like can make big differences. These differences are crucial, because soil is an extremely valuable asset that can play a role in yield, plant and animal health, carbon storage – the list goes on. At a recent Agricultural Science Association (ASA) webinar, titled The Future Of Farming Is In The Soil, Fiona Brennan of Teagasc stated: “When we think of the resources that underpin our agri-food system and sector, there’s probably nothing as important or as fundamental as soil. Mother (21) who left baby alone and filthy in hotel room put on probation for a year

A NEGLECTFUL mother who left her baby alone, wet and “filthy” in a hotel room with a bottle of milk propped up on a towel has been put on probation for a year. The woman (21) “abandoned” her four-month old son in dirty clothes while she left the building to smoke outside with a drunken man. Gardaí found the child alone in a buggy in a room that smelled strongly of cigarettes, with open alcohol bottles nearby. Placing her on a probation bond, Judge David McHugh said what the woman did was an “appalling breach of trust” for a mother. The accused pleaded guilty to wilfully neglecting, ill treating or abandoning her infant at the Clayton Hotel, Liffey Valley, under the Children Act.
