Pueblo Classic bicycle race April 24-25, bringing in pro, collegiate racers

Downtown Pueblo will turn into a high-speed bicycle race track April 25 when the Pueblo Classic bicycle event brings professional, amateur and collegiate racers to town.  “Racers turning themselves inside out at 30 miles per hour in a tight group is really something to see,” said Steve Liebel, a Colorado State University political science professor and avid racer who will be master of ceremonies for the event.   The Pueblo Chilly Criterium  yes, it’s a play on chile  “is 100 percent a spectator friendly event a lot of fun,” Liebel said. “A criterium is a lot like NASCAR racing, but on bicycles.  A 0.7-mile loop  is going to go down Union, cut across over onto Victoria and then it is going to go back up over the Riverwalk by the El Pueblo History Museum and then back down Union again,” Liebel explained.

Tell it to the Chieftain: Columbus debate continues

All people have the right to their opinion, but only after they get the facts straight. In every exploration and conquest, there have been negative and positive results. So far only the negative results have been stated in the media. The discovery of the New World has made many people prosper and enjoy a better life style than they had in other parts of the world. Do not exclude yourself. Most explorers worshipped the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob Many of their sailors and occupants on the ships wanted to have that freedom and no longer be oppressed. Some of the occupants had diseases since they lived in close proximity. Science had not invented the necessary vaccines needed to cross the seas like we have today. On whom are we going to practice blame psychology? Perhaps on a man with a vision to better the human condition of that era? I beseech you to do an introspection. Throw the first stone if you do not have a conscience.

Pueblo s Papa Jose s survives with relief funds; loyal customers

Although the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting restrictions have made running a restaurant an uphill battle, Papa Jose’s Union Cafe is surviving thanks to dedicated customers and a little help from some government programs. The restaurant launched 22 years ago, at 320 S. Union Ave., when Mike Pacheco left his job with the telephone company to help his mom, the late Elisa Pennington, start the restaurant. “I started to see the writing on the wall and my job wasn’t going to last,” Pacheco said. At the time his mom was working at his cousin Jeannie Breaux’s Mexican Deli and she asked her son, “Why don’t we try opening one. So we just got it started and never looked back,” he said.

Pueblo Chamber of Commerce names police force as Citizen of the Year

Collectively 206 men and women are being named “Citizen of the Year” by the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce, and it comes at a time when the city’s police force could use a boost. During the chamber s 110th annual meeting  which can be viewed virtually throughout the weekend   the 2021 Citizen of the Year award will be presented for the first time to a group rather than just one individual. The Pueblo Police Department was nominated for the award for the “tireless commitment to proactive community policing while protecting the constitutional right of those who choose to protest and assemble peacefully,” according to a chamber press release.
