GEORGE TOWN: As the world bids farewell to 2020 on New Year’s Eve, Penang will also mark the end of its iconic ferry service when cars and pedestrians board the vessels for one final sail before they are replaced temporarily by fast boats.
Come Jan 1, it’s all systems go for Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) to take over the ferry service, ending its more than a century-long history.

Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng has called on Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong to direct both the Penang Port Commission (PPC) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) to stop preparations to terminate the iconic Penang ferry service.
In a statement today, Lim asked Wee to instruct the two bodies to instead facilitate the immediate continuation of the service as normal on Jan 1 next year.
This came after PPSB CEO Sasedharan Vasudevan first announced that the long-time ferry service would be discontinued on Dec 31.

Authorities investigate Iranian tugboat docked in Butterworth

The authorities are investigating an Iranian tugboat with a crew of three for entering and anchoring at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) without permission on Dec 11.
The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) said that the police, Penang Immigration Department and the Northern Malaysia Marine Department had converged on the tugboat to probe the matter.
