GEORGE TOWN: A staff member at the Penang Immigration Department headquarters, in Seberang Jaya, is among four individuals detained in relation to a probe into the release of Macau scam suspects last month.
In a statement, Immigration director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud
(pic) said two members of the syndicate were arrested in Penang on Sunday (Feb 7). The arrests were the result of a month-long surveillance operation to trace and bust the syndicate which had been getting foreign workers to register for the programme without the proper procedures. The group would collect money from foreign workers who had Immigration-related offences and promised them that they would be brought to a department office despite not receiving a meeting slot via the Online Meeting System (STO), he said on Tuesday (Feb 9).
The syndicate would charge RM1,000 to RM1,500 per person to aid their registration in the programme without using the STO.
