Bolpur, West Bengal:
Exactly one week after Union Home Minister Amit Shah s triumphant parade at West Bengal s Bolpur, the town of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore s Visva Bharati University, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took on the BJP at a competitive campaign rally ahead of next year s assembly elections, attacking the party for divisive politics . Just by buying a few MLAs - and the most rotten ones - don t think you can buy the Trinamool Congress, she said in her first public reference to the exit of seven MLAs from her party 10 days ago, including former minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Amartya Sen declined to hold the BJP responsible for the row, as was suggested by many quarters.
Kolkata:
Political parties sure have good reasons to pursue individual goals, but rejection of communalism ought to be a shared value without which we shall not be worthy heirs of Tagore and Netaji , Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has said.
He said the Left and other secular parties in West Bengal have no less commitment than the ruling TMC to ensuring that communalism does not rear its ugly head in the state. Secular parties can differ in their detailed programmes, but the importance of rejecting communalism must surely be a strong shared value. The Left parties should have no less a commitment to that than the TMC (in keeping the state secular), Amartya Sen told PTI in an email interview.
