The free event at the McConnell House will feature Kentucky Memories, a traditional music group including Keith Garvin, a volunteer with Greenup Arts and the Greenup County Extension Council. Garvin’s son, Michael, also plays in Kentucky Memories. Families making music together is essential to the event. Also part of Kentucky Memories are their cousins, Philip Litteral, who plays guitar, and George Litteral, who plays banjo. “Families playing music together is a local tradition and part of our local cultural heritage,” Anne Stephens, Greenup County Extension Agent for Fine Arts and Community Development, said. “When the Fraley family (also related to the Garvins and the Litterals) started the American Folk Song Festival, it was really a family reunion with music. 21st-century technology boosts old-time music Feb. 12 at MTSU Center for Popular Music’s new ‘unconference’ Feb 10, 2021 at 10:57 am by WGNS Dom Flemons, a member of the groundbreaking and Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops from their 2005 founding until 2013, has released five albums as a solo performer and with other musicians, including his 2018 Grammy-nominated “Black Cowboys.” MURFREESBORO, Tenn.  The Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University is tuning up for a new series of special unconferences about old-time music, taking advantage of the last year s unusual learning opportunities and newfangled technology to reach an even wider audience each month.   Old-Time Music in the 21st Century Unconference 1: Authenticity and the Revival  is set Friday, Feb. 12, beginning at 1 p.m. Central via Zoom.
