Emergency managers breakdown evacuation notification process Biddle Fire in Medford

MEDFORD, Ore. – With Sunday’s Fire causing stress, some people got an emergency alert in the area of that fire, but others didn’t. When a fire spreads quickly, city and county emergency managers work in concert with first responders to get a handle on each individual situation. But as we’ve obviously seen with the historic Almeda Fire, the situation can be quite chaotic. The fire broke in the 3 o’clock hour. The first emergency alert was sent out at 5:04 p.m. But the alert was only sent to people in the evacuation zone who had previously signed up for it or who had a landline in the area. Many people with cell phones at the location, never got an alert.

Posted: Jul 19, 2021 6:07 PM Posted By: Jamie Parfitt MEDFORD, Ore. Police and fire officials say that the cause of a grass fire along the Bear Creek Greenway is still under investigation as of Monday. The fire erupted in the Greenway on Sunday afternoon, moving quickly. It grew to border Camping World and the old Crater Meat Packing property along Chevy Way and Biddle Road, respectively. Fire officials reported that fire s location and the surrounding buildings made it difficult for firefighters to attack it directly. Soon, authorities evacuated the nearby businesses, and shut down Biddle Road for the response. Rogue Retreat also evacuated the nearby Urban Campground, loading the residents into a bus for transport away from the area.

3-alarm grass fire in Medford closes Biddle Rd, causes level 1 evacuations

MEDFORD, Ore. A fire in Medford closed down Biddle Road late this afternoon, and tonight firefighters are still mopping up the area. “I was on the other side of the creek next to a cherry tree, and there were maybe 3 or 4 people yelling, fighting talking about lighting the place on fire and maybe 5 minutes later I could smell smoke,” said Matthew Cartmill, a witness to the possible start of Sunday’s fire. He says he believes the fire was human-caused. Shortly after smelling smoke, Cartmill says he saw flames and called 911. He says there was also a small explosion. “It sounded like smaller propane tanks, the area seemed to be an old camping area with lots of debris and garbage,” he said.
