The energy power map: The role of straits, seas and oceans for global energy security

Modern Diplomacy It is difficult to deny how from a geographical point of view world trade develops through the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Guinea, the North Sea, Alaska and the Caribbean. It is equally difficult to deny that the main hubs through which global trade transits are – as has been pointed out several times on these pages – the Suez Canal, the Strait of Malacca and the Cape of Good Hope. As for the Panama Canal, the situation is different since its underutilization depends mainly on its very limited width. We begin to turn our attention to the Strait of Hormuz which constitutes one of those strategic junctions essential to bring about economic globalization. This strait connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, and has a length of 63 km with a width 40, dimensions which certainly represent a problem for the crossing of oil tankers. Despite this, 30% of the world trade in oil passes precisely through this strait and in fact 2,400 oil tankers cross it every year.

No Harbor, No Problem: How the Allies Brought Their Own During the D-Day Invasion

The Mulberry Harbors were truly a BYOH affair. Key point: These artificial harbors could be combined to allow the invasion fleet to land heavy equipment and more troops. It was an ingenious idea and some of the the concrete harbor pieces can still be found today. Long before the first soldiers set foot on the beaches of Normandy on the morning of June 6, 1944 military planners knew that getting those troops to Normandy and establishing a beachhead was quite literally just half the battle. In addition to securing and holding the beaches, it would take considerable effort to supply those soldiers especially as they moved inland.

These buildings show off the best of nature-inspired architecture

Tuesday 15 December 2020 As sustainability and environmental issues start to assume a greater role in the considerations of architects and developers, it appears the age of the megabuilding may finally be over. Taking their place in 2021 are new, biophilic structures – from a school in India to an aquarium in Mexico and a hotel on a glacier – which incorporate elements of the natural world into their architecture, from sympathetic materials and forms to forging direct connections with their surrounding environments. Svart Hotel, Meløy, Norway Svart Hotel (pictured, above), built by Oslo-based architects Snohetta on the Svartisen glacier, north of the Arctic circle, will welcome its first guests in 2021. The hotel will use 85 per cent less energy than a comparable property thanks to the inclusion of solar panels and a series of channels cut through its roof that conduct light and heat into the interior.
