As a child, Sam Ozier grew up spending summers at Possum Kingdom Lake with his family. Now he captains a pirate ship there.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to build a pirate ship,” said the senior Texas A&M engineering student.
He decided during the pandemic lockdown to put together a business plan and Possum Kingdom Pirates LLC was born.
A search of Facebook Marketplace led him to purchase the well-used, former houseboat from a fellow in Illinois. They had it shipped down to Texas and upon further inspection, realized the bottom of the deck was heavily rusted. So, they stripped it down to just the pontoons and built up from there.

Weeks of excessive rainfall have forced Texas officials to open a third gate at Possum Kingdom Lake s Morris Sheppard Dam, putting nearby areas on voluntary evacuation and closing roadways.
The Brazos River Authority said Monday that the gate had been opened for a release of about 28,400 cubic feet of water per second.
In accordance with the release, the Texas Department of Transportation closed the Highway 16 Bridge below the dam. Be advised river levels will rise quickly, the organization cautioned. Recreation on the Brazos River is discouraged during gate releases. In case of an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
