Do you remember The Waltons? Anyone who recalls the 1970s television series The Waltons will have a good idea how Dennis describes her upbringing. The CBS drama portrayed the life of a close knit rural family in the Depression years of the 1930s. Dennis family made meals with mostly their own farm raised products like ham with gravy and biscuits, all cooked on a woodstove. I was raised on a farm and we grew and canned our own vegetables. We had sugar cane grinding and cooked syrup. I washed my brothers jeans and used a wood block (known as a ”battling block”)  to knock mud from the fields out of them,” Dennis explained.
