This very different Christmas weekend had a famous superhero giving a relative boost to the box office as
WONDER WOMAN 1984opened in first place with an estimated
$16.7 million.
The second solo adventure of the bullet-deflecting DC Comics icon managed the strongest three-day total since the pandemic began, beating the $9.3 million that Christopher Nolan s TENET collected over three days during Labor Day weekend.
Given the current coronavirus circumstances, director Patty Jenkins follow-up obviously couldn t compare to the first WONDER WOMAN s $103.2 million domestic opening back in June of 2017 for starters, WONDER WOMAN 1984 only released on 2150 screens, about half of the original movie s reach back when audiences could actually pack theaters. WONDER WOMAN went on to a domestic total of $412 million and $818 million worldwide.
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) Warner Bros. superhero film Wonder Woman 1984 took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated 16.7-million-U.S.-dollar debut from 2,151 locations, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore. It s the biggest opening weekend of any film released in North America since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March. Comscore noted that only 35 percent of all North American theaters are currently open amid virus surge. Providing hope for theaters which have been devastated by the pandemic, the highly anticipated tentpole film with a reported cost of 200 million dollars was released simultaneously in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming platform on Christmas Day.

Tom Hanks rides a horse and blasts a six-shooter in his new film, “News of the World.” Some of you might be thinking this must be his first cowboy role. To those, we respond: Have you forgotten about Woody so soon?
All of Hanks not just his voice is employed in this second cowboy role, playing Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd in 1870, a gentle Texan whose quiet and itinerant life is interrupted by the arrival of a girl.
Director and co-screenwriter Paul Greengrass reunites for the first time with Hanks since their 2013 outing “Captain Phillips.” This time, they’ve ditched the open water for an ambitious adventure firmly on land, based on the novel by Paulette Jiles. It’s a visually stunning film with a soulful message about forgiveness and moving past trauma.
