For Paul Greengrass, Releasing News Of The World Is A Statement Of Faith In The Movies

British director Paul Greengrass is known for his work on the “Jason Bourne” films with Matt Damon. He’s also known for movies based on recent historical events like “Captain Phillips,” which looked at the 2009 hijacking of the cargo ship Maersk Alabama, and “United 93” about the plane that went down in Pennsylvania on 9/11. But for his new film opening Christmas Day, “News of the World,” Greengrass makes a foray into historical fiction. Set in Texas in 1870, the movie is based on the novel by Paulette Jiles. Tom Hanks stars as Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a Civil War veteran who ekes out a living going from town to town performing readings from newspapers. He encounters Johanna Leonberger, nicknamed Cicada, a 10-year-old girl played by Helena Zengel.

Mark Kennedy December 22, 2020 - 2:06 PM Tom Hanks rides a horse and blasts a six-shooter in his new film, “News of the World.” Some of you might be thinking this must be his first cowboy role. To those, we respond: Have you forgotten about Woody so soon? All of Hanks — not just his voice — is employed in this second cowboy role, playing Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd in 1870, a gentle Texan whose quiet and itinerant life is interrupted by the arrival of a girl. Director and co-screenwriter Paul Greengrass reunites for the first time with Hanks since their 2013 outing “Captain Phillips.” This time, they’ve ditched the open water for an ambitious adventure firmly on land, based on the novel by Paulette Jiles. It s a visually stunning film with a soulful message about forgiveness and moving past trauma.

MOVIE REVIEW Tom Hanks, Texas, 1870: ‘News of the World’ as usual, he’s the right man for the job By Ty Burr Globe Staff,Updated December 23, 2020, 12:00 p.m. Email to a Friend Helena Zengel and Tom Hanks in News of the World. Photo Credit: Bruce W. Talamon/Universal Pictures/Associated Press I understand if Tom Hanks is sick of being compared to Jimmy Stewart, having spent the better part of his career shouldering that burden, but with “News of the World,” he’s practically asking for it. Set in and around post-Civil War Texas, the new film is the kind of gritty, de-romanticized western drama that reignited Stewart’s career after World War II, darkening his persona while giving the actor plenty of anti-heroic meat to chew.
