There are certain people who speak directly into their moment, and others who leave a message for history to decipher, whose work gains in relevance or whose life becomes uncannily meaningful decades after their death. It’s hard to think of a better example of the latter right now, in this year of protests and plague, than the renegade psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, one of the strangest and most prescient thinkers of the 20th century.

It’s easy to think that the story of the last several decades, at least as it comes to Christianity and society, is the story of moral shifting. In other words, things that were once considered wrong are now considered right, and things that were once considered right are now considered wrong. That certainly explains an awful lot, and certainly there have been moral shifts in Western society.

House and Senate Democrats endorsed the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) “Year in Hate” report that brands mainstream conservative and Christian nonprofits “hate groups” and plots them on a map with the Ku Klux Klan. The Democrats did not respond to longstanding criticisms of the SPLC regarding its racial discrimination and sexual harassment scandal or the fact that former SPLC employees have described the “hate” accusations as a “highly profitable scam.”
“After a tumultuous 2020, and the January 6 attack on our nation’s Capitol, we seek to enter an era of unity and repair in our country,” Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) began in her statement. “Now, more than ever before, the work done by the Southern Poverty Law Center to document hate and their insights contained in their annual ‘Year in Hate’ report should be brought front and center to inform our policy and our priorities.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) may be in trouble, but he isn t running away. The Florida Republican is reportedly under investigation for transporting a 17-year-old girl across state lines to have sex. That news led to allegations he has shown nude photos of his purported sex partners to colleagues on the floor of the House of Representatives â behavior that may not be illegal but (if true) is certainly dishonorable, gross, and wrong. Predictably, there have been calls for Gaetz to resign. Just as predictably, he has dismissed those demands.
