A hurtful slur and nonsense. That was Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston’s view of allegations he had brought financial gain to himself and his family’s business interests using public cash.

Humane society: Council renewed its contract with the Quinte Humane Society for a five-year term, agreeing to pay $3,389 per month for the society’s services.
The services include housing stray animals found in the city.
Coun. Bill Sandison asked for a report from the chief bylaw officer to detail the number of animals collected in Belleville in 2019 and 2020, along with the society’s related costs and what services are funded by the contract with Belleville. Belleville’s payments increase by about three per cent annually and Sandison said that may not be doing the society “any favours.”

Someone called police at 3:01 p.m. Friday to report an intoxicated person in the hallway of an apartment complex on Bridge Street West, police reported. Police arrived and found the woman was wanted on charges of failing to attend court, theft under $5,000, two counts of failing to comply with an appearance notice, failing to appear for fingerprints, assault and mischief.
Police arrested Melissa Meilleur, 43, then released her with a court date of June 3.
Mischief probed
Belleville police are seeking information about damage to a Pine Street home early Friday.
