MPS board candidates discuss race, privilege ahead of April 6 election

In a forum focused on race and equity, Milwaukee Public Schools board candidates sought to distinguish themselves in a field where all candidates have talked about the need to move toward restorative justice, diversify staff and curriculum, and listen more to students.  Students were among those asking questions at the forum Wednesday hosted by the youth-led group Leaders Igniting Transformation along with the ACLU of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Inner-city Congregations Allied for Hope (MICAH) and Black Educators Caucus MKE.  Four of eight seats on the board are up for election April 6, with no incumbents in the races: District 4: The two candidates who advanced from the primary election are Silver Spring Neighborhood Center Opportunity Youth Program Director Aisha Carr and North Side Rising organizer Dana Kelley. Incumbent Annie Woodward was taken off the ballot due to problems with her nomination papers. 

School Street trial starts at East Wichel Primary School

STUDENTS will be safer walking to school as a new trial begins at East Wichel Primary School in Staldon Road. Swindon Borough Council is working with the school and launched School Street which started on Monday as part of its School Safety Environment Zones scheme. This means traffic won t be allowed to drive down the road between 8.15am to 9.30am and 2.45pm to 3.45pm, except for permit holders. It will be in place for up to 18 months, with a formal consultation after six months, at the end of the trial it will be decided whether the scheme will be made permanent.

Primary election results: Kerr and Underly advance in DPI race Rory Linnane, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel In the primary race for state superintendent of schools, former Brown Deer superintendent Deborah Kerr and Pecatonica superintendent Jill Underly declared victories Tuesday night, pitting them against each other in the general election April 6. In Milwaukee, four candidates will advance to the general election for two contested seats on the school board. With some absentee ballots yet uncounted, Aisha Carr and Dana Kelley led in District 4; and Alex Brower and Jilly Gokalgandhi led in District 5. Brower and Kelley ran on a socialist slate together backed by the teachers union.
