April 15, 2021   ·   0 Comments Dufferin County councillors remember Mike Giles By Paula Brown, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Dufferin County councillors took the time during their regular council meeting last Thursday (April 8) to pay their respects to former chief building inspector, Mike Giles. “Many of us on this call today and in fact probably most of us if not all, knew Mike in some capacity or another,” said Darren White, Dufferin County Warden, at the top of the meeting. “He was an integral part of our staff and really a generally great guy.” Giles, passed away on March 21 at the age of 62. He began his career with Dufferin County in April of 1987, as a building inspector, and later assumed the role of chief building inspector in November of that year.  After working three decades in Dufferin County’s building department, Giles retired in December of 2017.

Headwaters pauses elective surgeries as COVID-19 cases rise

Headwaters Health Care Centre issued a joint statement last Friday (April 9) from the hospitals president and CEO Kim Delahunt, and Dr. Peter Cino, chief of staff and vice-president of medical affairs regarding the decision. “These requests from Ontario Health are in response to an increase in positive COVID-19 case counts and widespread community transmission of the virus province wide,” the statement reads. “The goal is to preserve critical care and human resource capacity as we respond to Wave 3 of the pandemic.”

Schools in UGDSB moving to remote learning | Orangeville Citizen

April 8, 2021   ·   0 Comments By Paula Brown Students in the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) will be making the shift to remote learning once again, as Public Health issues a Section 22 Order. Both the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health and UGDSB issued press releases late Monday (April 5) evening notifying that the change would go into effect starting April 7. “I wish this step was not required,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health and CEO of WDG Public Health. “I know the tremendous burden this places on families in our region. The growing number of cases across the province and the severity of the COVID-19 variants of concern places all of us at risk.”

Nearly 76 years later, Shulevitz now an acclaimed author and illustrator of children’s books is contemplating the role that fate played in preserving his life in his new memoir for kids, “Chance: Escape From the Holocaust.” In a phone interview with The Times of Israel, Shulevitz said that the title which was suggested by his wife, Paula Brown “reflects very much what was going on, because, to put it a certain way, fate was playing Russian roulette with our lives.”

Local Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser takes on different form

April 8, 2021   ·   0 Comments By Paula Brown, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dufferin & District took a different approach this year to their largest annual fundraiser, and the local group is now just shy of their fundraising goal.  Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dufferin & District host the Bowl for Kids Sake event each year, with the funds raised going towards operating their programs. Originally held at the Orangeville bowling alley, the event eventually switched to a Wii bowling tournament held at the Best Western Inn and Suites in Orangeville. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the local chapter of the non-profit has held off on hosting the event in-person, but has now revamped it to a virtual event called Move For Kids Sake.
