Unsound – a film on the queer and deaf community

Unsound. The Australian film is set at the intersection of the queer and deaf/hearing impaired community. The romance revolves around Noah, a queer musician, and Finn, a transgender man who runs a community centre for the deaf, featuring an amazing cast including Reece Noi from Game of Thrones as well as well-known Aussie actors Paula Duncan, Todd McKenny and Christine Anu. Greek-Australian deaf actor stars in new Australian feature film

Greek-Australian actor Yiana Pandelis lives in the ‘hearing world’ despite being born deaf. She stars as a deaf community leader in the award-winning Australian romantic drama Unsound, released this week (and screening in Melbourne at the Nova cinema and selected cinemas in other states). As part of her preparation for the role, the 24-year-old Melburnian learned Auslan (signing), which she had never used before. Pandelis’s character, Finn, is a transgender man in the early stages of transition, so she researched and worked with transgender people to understand the challenges they face, and studied how men dress and move. Her co-stars are experienced entertainers Todd McKenney, who plays Finn’s father; Reece Noi, of Game Of Thrones, who plays Noah​; ​ Paula Duncan, who plays Noah’s mother; and renowned singer Christine Anu, who plays musical icon Moniqua and wrote original music for the film.

The story follows disillusioned musician Noah ( Reece Noi; Game Of Thrones, When They See Us and Hit & Miss) who quits the band of his 90s pop icon mentor (played by legendary Aussie singer Christine Anu) and returns to his mother s home in Sydney, seeking connection and rejuvenation. Clashing with his mother (screen icon Paula Duncan) over old wounds, Noah searches for solace elsewhere and soon finds himself swept up in the vibrant, passionate life of a young, emerging trans-man, Finn (Yiana Pandelis), who is a proud, Auslan-only speaker who, with his father (Patron for Auslan Stage Left and Australian entertainer Todd McKenney) runs a local centre and nightclub for his deaf community.
