Closed or open? Latest Northern Rivers road update

6th Apr 2021 10:00 AM | Updated: 12:44 PM A number of roads have been closed by Northern Rivers councils after recent rain and due to other reasons. The current list by MyRoadInfo includes:   Byron Shire Council: Council is not aware of any other roads that are closed, she added.  As always - people should drive to the conditions and be aware that because the catchment is so wet, water rises quickly and can cause flash flooding in some areas.   Closed 1. Norton Street, Ballina (between Fox and Bentinck Streets) - Access to this road is restricted due to a council approved event.   2. Dalwood Road @ Gum Creek Weir (Caution) WATER OVER ROAD - Proceed with Caution

The $27M project that should fix Ballina s traffic woes

Premium Content Subscriber only The first stage of a $27m project to duplicate River Street in Ballina is now under way. Once complete, the work is expected to ease traffic congestion between the Pacific Highway at West Ballina and Kerr Street in Ballina, marking a significant investment to improve the local road network. River Street carries the largest volume of traffic in and out of Ballina and is at capacity during peak hours, the council explains on its website. Traffic flow recorded for 2019 was 26,100 vehicles per day and traffic modelling predicts traffic flow in 2036 will be 29,500 vehicles per day. Two-lane arterial roads have the capacity for around 18,000 vehicles per day whereas a four-lane road can cater for 36,000 vehicles per day.

Bypass for town s CBD is now one step closer

Premium Content Subscriber only A road that could bypass the Ballina CBD between North and West Ballina could be approved for constructions later this year. Ballina Shire Council is exploring the viability of building a road along the road reserve that connects the intersection of Barlows Road and River St in West Ballina through to Flat Head Road at North Ballina. General manager Paul Hickey said the council resolved to spend $12,000 on updated traffic modelling for the project at its December meeting. “In regards to the Barlows Road construction feasibility study, council has done initial environmental assessments, flood modelling and looked at other planning constraints, and on balance, that projects looks viable,” he said.
