CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas â It was a frustrating time for several members of the Nueces County District Attorneyâs office after an agenda displayed there would be a discussion surrounding a significant pay increase for the countyâs court administrator â a position that has already seen several raises since 2017.
That item prompted many attorneys to speak out during Commissioners Court this past Wednesday. This time â representing themselves and their livelihood.
âI do not know if this person deserves a pay raise,â said Will Greenlee, Nueces Country Assistant District Attorney. âWhat I do know â is optics and talent â each of you know the budget. Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales wiped away a tear while she talks about those who have lost their lives from COVID-19 on Saturday.
A year ago, Canales issued a declaration of local disaster for public health emergency. More than 700 people in the county have died of COVID-19 related illness since the pandemic last year. In one year we have had one purpose, Canales said during her speech, and that is to save lives.
Canales, Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo and Nueces County health director Annette Rodriguez spoke at the event commemorating the one-year anniversary of COVID-19. Each spoke about the past year, and discussed the county s current plan, and also participating in a wreath laying ceremony. There were about 20 people at the event.
