Phase 1B vaccinations delayed | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff Writer ST. CLAIRSVILLE The Belmont County Health Department had expected to begin a second phase of COVID-19 vaccinations next week, but word was received Wednesday that those shots will be delayed for at least two weeks. Residents eligible for the vaccine under Phase 1B of the state’s rollout will have to wait longer than anticipated. Belmont County Deputy Health Commissioner Robert Sproul said Wednesday that Gov. Mike DeWine’s office informed him the move to Phase 1B will be delayed by two weeks or more. During his Wednesday update to the Belmont County Board of Commissioners, Sproul said there has been a high demand for the shots statewide. He said his department continues to work through the groups in Phase 1A, which includes nursing home residents and staff, hospital workers and first responders. Sproul said vaccinations in that group are scheduled through this week and into the weekend.

WVU Medicine has overseen financial management at the struggling hospital since June 2019, when Douglass E. Harrison was named as Wheeling Hospital’s chief executive officer.

Times Leader Staff Writer ST. CLAIRSVILLE People across the region are being vaccinated against the coronavirus, with a focus on health and emergency response personnel. Belmont County Deputy Health Commissioner Robert Sproul said his office has been administering the 300 COVID-19 vaccines received last week and that 100 more doses arrived Monday. WVU Medicine Barnesville Hospital, Walgreens and CVS pharmacies are awaiting doses. “Barnesville did not get vaccinations so we had to do their staff,” Sproul said. Eastern Ohio agencies are receiving the Moderna version of the vaccine, which does not require extreme cold storage. Those inoculated will have a second dose in about 28 days.

CLAIRSVILLE Give Belmont County has been active this year and there are more projects to come, with the potential to raise $100,000 in funding to help benefit area residents. Lova Ebbert, committee member, said Give Belmont County began as an outreach to the community as is part of the Belmont County Enrichment Fund started in 2013 as a way of “giving back.” “Several of us in 2012 negotiated a lease with Rice Energy, and at that time the committee said if we ever get a landowner friendly and environmentally-friendly lease, we’re going to find a way to give back,” she said.
