Jennifer Khordi was in Barnegat Light, New Jersey, shortly after 6:10 a.m. Sunday to film the Milky Way during “Astronomical Twilight,” which occurs an hour before sunrise. A building wave for offshore wind energy surged out of the Biden administration, with March 29 announcements that set a goal of building 30,000 megawatts of capacity and opening up to 800,000 more acres for leasing in the New York Bight.
Two weeks later, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management moderated the plan, withdrawing potential leasing areas off New York acknowledging conflicts with commercial fishing, maritime traffic and tourism that will be rife in the East Coast’s most crowded waters.
But on a broad scale, it appears to be full speed ahead for BOEM. Even during the Trump administration’s fitful approach to offshore wind, the agency itself worked consistently to make leasing possible for wind power developers.
Wind energy firm using buoys to study conditions, animals

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) A company planning a wind energy farm off New Jersey’s southern coast will deploy two research buoys to study conditions in the area envisioned for its development.
The devices from Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind will collect atmospheric and weather data in the area, and track the migration of birds, fish, turtles and other animals that live there. The data will be shared with researchers at Rutgers University.
The buoys are due to be deployed next month.
The research comes as activity ramps up off New Jersey’s coastline to establish wind-powered energy sources.

Cue the eerie music or maybe “Hallelujah!” – “They’re here!!” It’s a welcome sight for many anglers working the coastal inlets as bluefish have arrived and by the social media posts they are biting on plugs and metals. Some of the fish have been close to 10 pounds, so now is the time to hit the jetties. I heard of bluefish arriving from Manasquan Inlet, Barnegat Inlet, Brigantine, and south almost around the same time in the last 24 hours. Speaking of the jetties, anglers, have only 2 days left to get a few keeper blackfish as the season officially closes May 1. Jigs or rigs tipped with clam and green crabs have been the good baits to use. Striped bass in the 14- to 27-inch range are picking up clams, soft plastics, and small plugs in the backwaters.
