Kolkata, May 7 : The Bharatiya Janata Party won 77 of the 292 seats in the recently concluded Assembly elections in West Bengal, way below the expectations of the party that was eying to wrest power from the ruling Trinamool Congress in the state.
But there is more that might bother the saffron brigade, which used all its resources in the run-up to the high-octane elections in its bid to breach the Trinamool citadel in Bengal.

Kolkata: Defecting from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not been a good decision for most of the stateâs turncoat MLAs, it seems from the election results. Of the 19 sitting MLAs from the TMC, the Left and the Congress who joined the BJP since 2019 and contested on a BJP ticket this time, only five have managed to win.

Having spent the last one month in Bengal, it is clear to me that BJP is set to emerge as the main opposition party. BJP supporters may not like this but the ground reality is that the party will actually find it difficult to cross double digits. Psephologists on the ground put the possible range of seats for the BJP between 80 and 95 in the Assembly of 294. My own impression is it will be on the lower side.
