Crop Watch: Rain transforms crops, but heat is needed now
Crop Watch: Rain transforms crops, but heat is needed now >More in © Gary Naylor Crops are responding to the wet May and are moving on, but its warmth that is needed now to help maximise yields. Especially for maize. One notable feature being reported by our agronomists is the shortness of winter barley and winter bean crops. Short barley crops could have implications for livestock farmers. We round up the situation around the country with our Crop Watch team. Prime Agriculture (Suffolk) Crops have responded to the rain and now look verdant; with appropriate inputs they should be on track to reach their individual potential.

Crop Watch: Cool weather keeps disease in check for now
Crop Watch: Cool weather keeps disease in check for now >More in © Tim Scrivener Dry days and cold nights are keeping a lid on plant disease levels in crops, although the lack of rain is starting to show with crops exhibiting slow growth and signs of stress. Agronomists are weighing up fungicide inputs in these dry conditions, as experience shows that the first signs of rain will heighten the disease pressure. Oilseed rape crops have been hit by late frosts just as they moved into flowering, so there are some concerns on how this will effect pod set and, eventually, yield.

Crop Watch: Care needed to tackle weeds without crop damage
Crop Watch: Care needed to tackle weeds without crop damage >More in © Tim Scrivener The warmer spell is seeing fields dry out and agronomists are assessing the impact of yet another wet winter on crops. Disease is being found in some crops and plans are being made to tackle weeds as plants start to actively grow. However, the large temperature range increases the risk of herbicide damage on newer, softer growth. North: Mary Munro AICC/Strutt and Parker (Perthshire) The snow and rain have departed and we have had a good drying wind for a few days, so much so that many fields could be crossed without making a mess.
