Studio owner Barry Silverman: After COVID, ‘we will have the best of both worlds’

A vocal studio is a controlled environment where putting people in isolation booths is standard procedure, so you’d think such a business would be fairly immune to COVID problems. But the pandemic cost Barry Silverman, co-owner of Mobile-based Soundworks, a chance to meet a star.
“We’ve had some scares,” said Silverman. “Morgan Freeman was supposed to be coming in for some voiceover work about 4-5 weeks ago. We cleaned everything, of course. But a day or two before the session, one of our voice talents informed us she had just tested positive, and she had been in the studio right before that. In good conscience we had to let the people who’d booked the session know.”

Presenting the annual Mobile Jewish Film Festival in an online format isn’t necessarily what organizers preferred to do, but the COVID-era necessity has transformed the event into a regional happening involving groups in Huntsville and Pensacola.
“That’s something the pandemic has done,” said Barry Silverman, one of the event’s co-chairs at the Mobile Jewish Federation. “It’s changed our life and things are not going to go back to how they were. … Some things have opened up.”
For potential viewers, the festival is a straightforward affair. Between March 5 and March 25 the festival will present seven films for online viewing; each will be available for a three-day window. Patrons have the option of subscribing to the whole slate for $60 or to buy tickets to individual films ($9 for single tickets, $15 for household viewing).
