New boots and working dress coming for the Army.
Among reasons for the landward component of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) embarking on a replacement exercise for among others, its boots and camouflage uniforms, are them being compromised, old-fashioned and uncomfortable.
This will, in time, see SA Army personnel wearing a new working uniform with one of three different camouflage patterns, new boots and a new camouflage cap, similar to the French Foreign Legion’s kepi.
The new uniform, boots and other clothing projects, according to Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, follow concerns raised by her as well as Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD) and the Defence Force Service Commission on the poor quality of combat boots and uniforms. Soldiers deployed with the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) found boots wore out quickly in the hot and humid environment.

Main contractors on the two SA Navy (SAN) projects currently underway need not concern themselves about receiving payment for building four new seagoing platforms for the maritime service of the national defence force.
The re-assurance to Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) and Sandock Austral Shipyards (SAS) in Durban came from Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula in reply to a Parliamentary question.
She told Democratic Alliance (DA) parliamentarian Kobus Marais the Department of Defence (DoD) âconducted a reprioritisation exercise to allocate the remaining Special Defence Account (SDA) budget to ensure sufficient funding to meet contractual obligations for Project Biroâ.

Landlocked Lesotho provides South African defence and law enforcement agencies tasked with border protection ongoing problems of which livestock theft is one.
This was confirmed in response to a question asked of Police Minister Bheki Cele by a National Council of Provinces (NCOP) representative. The ministerial reply also illustrated the extent of co-operation between the SA Police Service (SAPS) and the SA National Defence Force (SANDF).
In his written reply to North West Freedom Front Plus (FF+) representative Stephan du Toit, Cele agreed with the “stock theft hotspot” label currently given to the border between South Africa and the mountainous Lesotho kingdom.

The National Defence Industry Council (NDIC) has updated Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD) on its initiatives, from small arms manufacturing to alternative funding models, that will help the struggling South African defence industry.
The NDIC was launched by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula in March 2016, with the Council chaired by the Secretary for Defence. The NDIC consists of senior government officials, captains of industry and the South African Aerospace, Maritime and Defence Industries Association (AMD). It has been tasked with developing a Defence Industry Strategy and a plan for implementation to develop and transform the industry. The NDIC originates from an appreciation that the local defence industry cannot exist and develop effectively on its own without the targeted support and direction of government.
