After `Bharat Bandh` called earlier this month, the protesting farmers on Sunday declared a wider day-long movement, urging its leaders to undertake a hunger strike from wherever they are protesting.
The announcement comes after a meeting of farmers here at Singhu border gave their nod to the decision taken by farmer representatives of 32 different unions on Saturday for holding the hunger strike on December 14 (Monday) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As the government directed Delhi Police to file cases against protesting farmers for violating Covid-19 norms, the farmers too upped the ante and filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking its intervention in ending the deadlock over the new farm laws. Two officials of Delhi Police on duty at the site of the agitation have tested positive for Covid-19 and have been put in isolation. On Saturday, farmer groups will take their protests up one notch by picketing all toll plazas on the outskirts of Delhi and blocking railway tracks. They will hand over memorandums to district magistrates wherever they are, to register their protest against the farm laws. And on December 14, they will launch an agitation against private procurement by announcing a boycott of goods produced by some corporate houses, which will include Reliance Jio, Adani and other Ambani products.

NEW DELHI: As the ongoing farmers agitation entered the 15th day on Thursday, the central government offered to meet again with leaders of tens of thousands of farmers who have been blockading key highways for two weeks, but rejected their demand for the repeal of three laws on agricultural reform.
The farmer leaders, on the other hand, are adamant on intensifying the protests further to press for repeal of three farm laws. At a joint press conference on the Singhu border, the farmer leaders also said that agriculture is a state subject and Centre has no right to make such laws.
