Panel: Future Fleet Numbers Not As Important As Capabilities Like Sealift, Unmanned

A panel of Navy experts is hopeful that discussions around the future naval fleet will focus on big-picture questions – how will the Navy and the nation pay for modernizing the sealift fleet, do unmanned craft count as ships, and how does the sea service balance the needs of small and large shipyards as it builds and maintains the fleet – instead of getting stuck on debates over exactly how many ships of each class the Navy needs for its future force design.
The Marines call it their “Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations” concept.

The U.S. Marine Corps a few years ago started saying it needed to get serious about sinking enemy warships. Now the amphibious branch is putting its money where its mouth is.
The Corps is asking Congress for money to start buying two powerful new anti-ship missile types. One is a new version of the venerable Tomahawk cruise missile. The other, an adaptation of the U.S. Navy’s stealthy Naval Strike Missile.
I am worried about the state of the readiness of the nuclear triad, Deputy SecDef nominee Kath Hicks tells the Senate Armed Services Committee this morning, “and, if confirmed, that is an area I would want to get my team in place and start to look at right away.”
