Hoyle Nix and the West Texas Cowboys (“That’s ‘
Cowboys,’” says Nix, “not ‘Playboys’”) have been together since 1946. If he seems adamant about the name, it’s because he’s had a lifetime of being confused with Bob Wills’ band. Both are Western swing bands, but while Wills achieved national recognition in the thirties and forties, Nix’s group is a household word only in the 250-mile radius around Big Spring in West Texas, where the Cowboys play every Saturday night at Hoyle Nix’s Stampede club. The Stampede is a dancing crowd where you can expect to see deftly executed Texas two-steps, cotton-eyed Joes, and put your little foots. “We play by ear,” says Nix. “I might whistle a tune in the car on the way to a dance, but we’ve never rehearsed in the thirty years the band’s been together.”
Previous anniversaries of Cubs first league game By JohnW53 on May 7, 2021, 4:43am CDT +
The Cubs are scheduled to host the Pirates today, May 7 the
150th anniversary of their first league game, also played at home: their National Association debut, a victory over the Cleveland Forest Citys.
After 3 innings at the Union Grounds, the White Stockings, as they were known then, led, 14-1. But they barely hung on to win, 14-12.
I described that game in detail in a previous post.
Then I wondered how the Cubs had fared on other significant anniversaries of that historic win.
Here is what I found:
Election results show who s winning Fort Worth City Council races

May 2 FORT WORTH Though several Fort Worth council members appear on their way to another term, fresh faces will come to the council for the first time in four years.
The 2021 race drew the most candidates in recent memory with nearly 50 vying for the city s eight districts. Council member Dennis Shingleton s retirement opened sprawling District 7, which includes historic neighborhoods inside Loop 820 as well as Fort Worth s rapidly growing far northern suburbs. Council members Brian Byrd and Ann Zadeh s bid for the mayor s office created vacancies in District 3 and District 9.
Today’s best known band playing Western swing comes from an unlikely source – West Virginia. Since 1969 Asleep at the Wheel has both preserved and advanced this nearly forgotten subgenre of country music through their tributes to previous generations of musicians as well as their own innovations that keep the music in the present.
Initially playing straight country, the band switched to Western swing after hearing Merle Haggards’ A Tribute to the Best Damn Fiddle Player in the World. They soon had a regular gig in Berkeley, WV and would be called on to open rock shows in the DC area.
