STATE government in Virginia used to be almost an afterthought, as most voters focused their attention on congressional and local races in non-presidential years. They paid attention to gubernatorial races every four years, but many members of the General Assembly ran unopposed, especially in off years, and only a minority of their constituents even knew their names.
No more. Thereâs no better example of how competitive these part-time legislative seats have become than the number of candidates running for them.
With all 100 seats in the House of Delegates up for grabs this year, there are even challengers to 15 House incumbents (12 Democrats and three Republicans) from their own party, including some high-profile Democrats such as Delegates Lee Carter, D-50th, and Elizabeth Guzman, D-31st, in Prince William County; Mark Levine, D-45th, in Arlington; and Kaye Kory, D-38th, and Ibraheem Samirah, D-86th, in Fairfax.

RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) -Virginia lawmakers won’t see any vetoes when they reconvene on Wednesday.
“It’s highly unusual for a governor not to have any vetoes whatsoever,” Bob Denton, a Virginia Tech professor and WDBJ7 political analyst, said.
Lawmakers will debate amendments proposed by Governor Ralph Northam.
Western Virginia lawmakers offered a preview during a Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce forum Tuesday morning, when they discussed a proposal to legalize the possession or marijuana this summer.

RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ) - The regular session of the Virginia General Assembly will open Wednesday with a host of high-profile issues on the agenda.
But as lawmakers consider the legalization of marijuana, abolition of parole, repeal of the right-to-work law and many other controversial measures, the coronavirus pandemic still looms large.
That, says Virginia Tech Professor and WDBJ7 Political Analyst Bob Denton, will set up what he describes as “dueling sessions.”
“There’s one focusing on the pandemic, the implications and economic aspects of that,” Denton said Tuesday morning, “but yes indeed it’s going to be a continuation of some of the very progressive initiatives that were introduced last year.”
